Keep on Top of Your Eye Health With Routine Exams

Our eyes work hard for us every day for 16 hours or more. They change their range of focus innumerable times and constantly dart around to help us navigate our surroundings. That’s why it’s imperative to get them examined by an ophthalmologist regularly.

An eye exam evaluates your vision and checks for eye diseases. An ophthalmologistuses a variety of instruments to evaluate his (or her) patients’ eye health. He shines bright lights directly into their eyes and has them look through an array of lenses. Eye drops that dilate the pupils allow him to look deep inside to check for signs of eye conditions. 

These tests evaluate visual acuity (sharpness), depth perception, eye alignment and eye movement. The eye doctor may even spot other conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes before your primary care doctor does.

If you (or your child) have no symptoms or risk factors, follow this age-related exam schedule to ensure that your eyes are in their best condition. 

Under 3: Have an ophthalmologist look for the most common eye problems: lazy eye (amblyopia), crossed eyes or misaligned eyes.

3 to 5: a comprehensive eye exam.

5 and older: every one to two years if the child has no symptoms of vision problems and no family history of vision problems.

20 to 39: every two to three years.

40 to 59: every two years.

60 and older: yearly.

People with diabetes, earlier eye trauma, previous eye surgery or a family history of glaucoma should be examined more often. With simple precautions and regular professional care, excellent eye health can be maintained and enjoyed throughout life.
